The raw material: Gewürztraminer

Color of berry skin: Rose
Species: Vitis vinifera
Synonyms: Gewurztraminer, Gewürz, Gertie, Gentil Rose Aromatique, Traminer Musque
Origin: Along the Rhine in Alsace between the Vosges and the Black Forest
Notable regions: Alsace, Germany, Northeast Italy, New Zealand, Switzerland, USA, Canada

Practice:

  • Compare the nose of a quality Gewürztraminer, such as Trimbach or Hugel, with a dry white table wine.
  • Then compare a Gewürztraminer with a Muscat preferably from the same grower. Notice how much richer, spicier yet less grapey the nose of the Gewürztraminer is to the Muscat.
